About Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a unique approach to health care that seeks to answer the question “why?”  By looking for the “why” behind a patient’s symptoms, we can address and treat the roots of illness – instead of masking symptoms by prescribing medicine. Finding the root cause of a patient’s symptoms requires a deep dive into the patient’s history, environment, lifestyle, genetics, and more. A thorough physical exam also provides key data regarding a patient’s nutritional status and possible toxin exposures. The interplay between all of these aspects guides a practitioner to create a personalized care plan for YOU. At MEND, we don’t create care plans based off of generic protocols – we base our care plans off of your unique needs. Get answers and get on the MEND!

We investigate chronic infections, mold, heavy metals, and toxin exposure to relieve the stressors that prevent your body from healing.

Cancer Support

We offer integrative support options for those with active cancer or those in remission. For more information on this, please see our integrative cancer care page.

Digestive Health

A deeper look at digestion to uncover what’s driving discomfort, inflammation, or imbalance, and to support long‑term gut healing.

Metabolic & Blood Sugar

We identify the factors affecting blood sugar, insulin, and metabolism to help you regain energy, stability, and long‑term metabolic health.

Hormone & Reproductive Health

From PMS to menopause to thyroid and adrenal concerns, we uncover the root causes behind hormonal symptoms and guide you toward steadier balance.

Autoimmune & Immune Regulation

We look beyond the diagnosis to understand what’s activating your immune system and help you build a more stable, regulated foundation.

Chronic Fatigue & Energy Disorders

We explore the underlying drivers of fatigue—physiological, environmental, and biochemical—to help you regain clarity, stamina, and daily capacity.

Neurological, Cognitive, and Mental Health

FAQs for Functional Medicine

We require the initial appointment to be completed in person. After this, if you live within the state of Iowa, telehealth can be used for appointment follow-ups. Your provider may request additional in-person visits every 18 months or as needed based on your health condition.

Your initial appointment is 90 minutes (adult) or 75 minutes (children). In this appointment, you will review your health history in depth with the provider, discuss any current health concerns, complete a physical exam, and review the provider’s recommended next steps.

Every person will be different based on the health condition being treated, severity, and labwork concerns. However, we would plan for your initial appointment and then a follow-up about 4-6 weeks after completing the recommended labs or treatments. After your lab review appointment, your provider will give you a plan that is typically a minimum of 3-months. For patients being seen for general wellness, a yearly follow-up is recommended.

Prior to your appointment, you will need to complete the forms found in your portal. To find these instructions, click here. You do not need to fast for your initial appointment.

While we take a whole body approach to health and often do more in-depth evaluations than primary care, our office does not act as a primary care office. For things that require acute care services (ie UTI, strep throat, etc), you will want to maintain a relationship with your primary care provider.

Yes! We do use medication on an as-needed basis. If a medication is originally filled by our office, we will continue to fill this medication while you are under our care. If you are on other medications that were not originally prescribed by our office, you will need to continue to have these filled with your primary care or specialists office.
